If Microsoft concentrated on ONE thing, what would you pick?

If Microsoft were to spend time on just ONE thing for the next 6-8 months — what would you pick?

  • Vista+
  • .NET Framework 4.0
  • Silverlight
  • WPF/WCF/WF/etc..
  • Exchange Server
  • Windows Server
  • Marketing (seriously — trying to address the negative market)
  • Zune
  • Other — but it can’t be more than one identifiable thing.

Remember, just one thing.  Just one. :)

You can rank them if you’d like — because I know it’s hard to select. But — no ties for first place.

My list would look like this:

Vista, Silverlight, .NET, Marketing, Everything else.

The only reason I’d pick Vista first is because there’s such a bad impression of Vista right now — sometimes rightfully so (and many are just Vista-bashers).

  1. Definitely Silverlight. If one were creating a RIA *today*, the most conservative architectural choice is Flex/Flash/AIR. Microsoft needs to enhance Silverlight to change that.

  2. I’d definitely agree that MS needs to work on Silverlight to give it a better chance. It’s great that it’s .NET, but it can’t rest on that being the only reason someone would adopt it. It needs to be more competitive with Flex/Flash/AIR than it is today to truly succeed and not just be niche. Thanks for the comment neil.
