Public Service Announcement: Backup your PC/Mac today!

When did you last backup your important electronic documents, photos, videos, songs, e-mail addresses, etc? When your hard drive dies tomorrow, do you have another copy of all of your digital photos? If your laptop or desktop computer dies, how long would it take you to get it back to working state?

If the answer to the first question is any of the following, it's time to start copying some files!

  • Sometime this year
  • Sometime this decade
  • Do you remember when a 1 GB drive was HUGE?!
  • I have a 5 1/4" floppy here some where -- now if I only had a floppy drive!
  • Back-up? Huh? Speak my language please!

I use Acronis True Image Home. It's decent, fast enough, and has a very nice bootable CD option. You can backup a complete partition, and continue to use your PC (although the computer definitely slows down).

What's a good option for the Mac? I'd like to make a backup of it sometime soon.

I don't bother with backing up everything, but I do have a second hard drive in my system whose sole purpose is to receive a copy of "My Documents" and my Desktop. I schedule a robocopy script every night and it's done.

Why not back up everything using something like True Image? The reason I use it is that I want to get back up to speed as quickly as possible if I have a problem and not spend several weeks installing software, reconifiguring settings, etc..

The worst part about only backing up My Docs is that not everything is stored there by default. Outlook folders for example aren't...
