Media Center 2005 Remote Stopped working ...
Two nights ago, I upgraded to the latest rollup package (2) for my home built Media Center. Last night, likely coincidentally, the remote control stopped doing its one task: controlling. It was clearly sending the signal (the IR repeaters installed in our house were flashing as expected), but the media center wasn't functioning. After taking the batteries out and reseating them, it still didn't work. I restarted the media center. Nothing. Turns out, occasionally, the remote needs to be reset completely. You can leave the batteries out for as much as a week to drain the capacitors, or you can take a short cut I found on the web in various forums:
Using a conductive metal (a paper clip for example), remove the batteries. Touch the positive and negative leads together on one end of the battery compartment for several seconds with the paper clip. Repeat on the other end. Replace the batteries.
This simple solution to reseting (shorting) the remote did the trick and the remote began functioning again.

Not sure it was a coincidence. My remote stopped working immediatly after upgrading to rollup 2. My problem was that the directional buttons and the OK button didn't work, but things like Live TV and Recorded TV worked fine. The same symptoms occured with all 3 of my remotes (tried 2 others from my extenders).
I restarted a couple times and eventually it started working again. I didn't change batteries or reset my remote. I never figured out why it started working again.

Interesting. None of the buttons on my remote worked (well, none of the useful ones).

I had the same problem with the dirrectional buttons and the OK button. All the other functions of the remote worked. I have had this problem before and restarting usually took care of it. I recently applied ubdate 2 and restarts were not solving the problem. I went to "human interface devices" which is in the "device manager" and uninstalled the "Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver". I then unpluged the USB remote receiver and then plugged it back in. Windows reinstalled the device automaticly and all function of the remote now work. Hope this helps.

Thanks Matthew.
That's an interesting fix as well. Maybe I'll try that next time instead of 'shorting' the remote.

Lost all remote functions here. Tried the less-intrusive remove the driver and reinstall solution first, but that did nothing. Shorting-out the remote did the trick though! Thanks...but, boy am I sick of all the bugs in MCE.

Shorting the remote used to work for me, but now it isn't sending a signal at all. It was just working fine, then nothing at all. No lights, nothing. This remote is the biggest POS I've purchased in a long time. Can't M$ even make a remote that doesn't need rebooted? This is just PATHETIC. And then M$ wonders why no one wants to use their MCE product. Quit releasing buggy crap and folks would flock to it.

Does MS really wonder that? I think they're actually quite happy with the success of the product and I'm generally happy with it as well. It's as good as the other PVR options out there and often better.
Certainly remotes die. Maybe you just have a bad one. It happens -- to all electronics.

My remote suddenly stopped working as well. I shorted it but it still isn't working. None of the buttons work. The receiver is lighting up with the red dot like it is receiving the signal and I put new batteries in the remote. The green light comes on the remote but nothing. I went under my device manager but Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver wasn't listed. I uninstalled everything listed under human interface devices and replugged everything. Still nothing! Any ideas?

The tranceiver isn't listed? That's very strange. Do you happen to have a universal remote of any sort that might be used as a test -- to see where the problem is?

I have a universal remote for my living room television. What should I do next?

Does your universal remote support Media Center? Recent remotes all seem to. I'd suggest checking that out-see if it does, and if so, set it up as a test. It would help eliminate potentially at least one factor -- whether the receiver is working.

Just an update... it was my receiver... I did what you said and nothing worked so I bought a new receiver and BAM! good as new. Thanks for the help!
