Anything by Iain M Banks – Excession, Player of Games, Inversions are a good start in his selection of Sci-Fi. http://www.iain-banks.net/science-fiction/

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M._Stirling as an author. In particular the Nantucket and Emberverse series.

If you’re an avid book reader, I’d also strongly suggest that you check out http://bookmooch.com as a way to save a lot of money feeding your book habit.

I’d recommend James Rollins’ books. They’re real mind benders, especially “The Black Order,” which does a very intriguing job of marrying intelligent design with evolution through quantum mechanics. Plus, beautifully action packed. http://www.jamesrollins.com

Any book by Richard K Morgan (especially Altered Carbon and Thirteen). http://www.richardkmorgan.com/

If you want to move to the more literary side of Science Fiction (I was an English major), “Cloud Atlas” (yes it is Sci-Fi, but only about 1/3 of the book is) by David Mitchell and “Never Let Me Go” by Kazuo Ishiguro are both incredible.

Thank you for info on svchost. an interesting book with real cool relevant illustrations (if you can find a copy) with some great history woven with a fast paced fiction plot is Angels and Demons by Dan Brown ( i thought it was better than The DiVinci Code) Micheal Crichton writes some interesting books relevant to contemporary technology…i find some of the older ones are better (probably ‘cuz he wrote all of them himself-no hired fill in help) Andromeda Strain, Terminal Man) some of the more recent are more hit and miss-Sphere, Congo just a few suggestions. thank again for the computer help! phil
